Website, web app, or MVP? What your business actually needs

“We need an app” is how many first conversations start. Sometimes it's true. Just as often, the fastest path to revenue is something simpler — and cheaper. Here's the decision logic we walk through with every new client.

A website sells; a web app works

A website's job is persuasion: explain what you do, build trust, and convert interest into enquiries or sales. A web app's job is function: logins, dashboards, bookings, payments, workflows. Confusing the two leads to expensive websites that don't convert, or underpowered apps that frustrate users.

Choose a website first when…

  • Your immediate problem is not enough leads or credibility.
  • Customers currently find you through referrals and you have nowhere professional to send them.
  • You sell a service that people research before buying.
  • You need results in weeks, not months.

Choose a web app or portal when…

  • Your team runs the business on spreadsheets that constantly break.
  • Customers need accounts, bookings, or self-service.
  • Manual admin is eating hours every single day.
  • You already have demand — the bottleneck is operations.

Choose an MVP when the product is the business

If your idea is a product — a SaaS tool, a marketplace, a platform — then the goal of version one is not completeness. It's evidence. An MVP should do one valuable thing end-to-end, get into real users' hands quickly, and tell you what to build next. The most common MVP mistake is building six months of features before the first user signs in.

The honest sequencing

Most businesses do best with: a conversion-focused website first, automation for the busiest workflow second, and custom product development once demand is proven.
